ECO Committee & Club
Bronze Eco Award
After a year of meetings, environmental reviews and LOTS of eco friendly campaigning, Dinting have received much deserved recognition in the form of our Bronze Eco Award. Congratulations in particular to the eco committee and club members who attend regular meetings, work hard to share information and educate the wider school community, and compost everyday!! This award could not have been achieved without your hard work and dedication to making our school and our world a greener place!
Meetings have already taken place to highlight the steps we need to take to achieve our Silver Award and further reviews and campaigns are currently being planned for September!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the eco committee and all of the children throughout our school who made Waste Week a memorable and educational experience for our whole school community.
The Eco Committee deserves particular praise for the hard work of the class representatives and others, who visited their respective classes throughout the school during the week to give 20 minute presentations which they had researched and written themselves. All of the staff were hugely impressed with the high standard and audience appropriate information and activities presented. Congratulations!
As well as monitoring and reducing waste within the school, during the week we worked on a project called ‘Bottle Biome’ which you may have seen blooming on the fence in our playground. Every class has re-used plastic bottles to make mini-gardens, fish, mini-beasts and decorative river weed and some classes have also been writing stories and poetry about nature and the environment.
This is all working towards our school entry for the ‘Totally Creative’ Total Green Schools Award. Wish us luck!
We also have a large ECO-club group which includes waste monitors and lots of environmentally aware children with bags of enthusiasm and ideas to make a difference.
We also encourage childen to add to the
ECO school blog
– using our code 225009 to add entries.
“The Eco club is a very exciting development for the school, and enhances the current curriculum, especially the links with science. The children are learning to value the earths resources using their own investigative techniques and will be leading the way on recycling and other Eco issues. Links with the local community could also be strengthened and the school will benefit from the general improvements identified by the club as a whole.”
Julie Nankivell – Science Link Governor.
Our First Campaign is underway to raise awareness of October being ‘Walk To School Month’ and this week being ‘Travel Smart Week’. All children and parents have received a travel questionnaire raising issues of fuel consumption and life style choices. This week we have asked children to keep a ‘Travel Smart’ diary in the hope to make the children of Dinting ‘Walking Wonders’. We have set a target of 350 journeys to be walked, scooted or cycled this week, but Dinting C of E (VA) School has made this target not just to be accomplished but to be SMASHED. Check out the school website in November to see if we achieved our goal.
