After two days, and hundreds of players already selected, today marks the final day of the 2018
opened their draft with a pair of catchers in the first two rounds, but followed up with a pitcher heavy selection on the second day. They started with by taking outfielder Ryder Green, but followed that up by taking pitchers in six of their next seven picks.
Among those pitchers selected were Frank German out of the University of North Florida and Rodney Hutchison out of the University of North Carolina. That second selection is a favorite of the author, who may or may not also write at SBNation’s UNC blog.
As for what happens today, your guess is as good as anyone. Pretty soon, we’ll be up over 1000 players drafted. Obviously, plenty of them are going to end up being people that not even regular draft experts know much about.
The late rounds have seen all sorts of players drafted. In the past, the Yankees have used these picks to take
’s sons as a hat tip more than anything. Other teams have used these picks to take non-baseball players either as a flier or just for the hell of it.
Among the current Yankees to go in the 11-40th rounds include
, and Brandon Drury. There’s definitely value that can be found in the later rounds, but a lot of these guys might not end up amounting to anything.
Even if we don’t know much about the players who get drafted, the late rounds are often where some of the best and most fun names pop up, so be on the lookout for those as well.
